3D printers

Mar 14, 2025

As curious as I was in 3D printing (I really had no idea what it was all about) I started with a special deal on Amazon and purchased a little cute printer. Easy to use no skills needed.

I learned a lot with this little machine. I have since, with a very great deal on Amazons prime time deals, upgraded to my Enders 3 series printers from Creality. I got all 3 for almost 40% of regular retail price. However, I quickly learned that the low-cost printers require a lot of learning. They have to be assembled literally from the ground up. Not a big issue, I am a trained machinist anyway, but it is very time consuming. Nice thing though, you learn a lot about the technique involved, and this comes in handy when something brakes and need to be replaced, as well as regular maintenance. Because of this I now have a well-stocked spare parts bin.

My first printer was a Weefun Tina2 mini 3D printer. I have given this a new home with my granddaughter. The total measurement is only 200×200 mm. and 270 mm. tall. The build plate is 100 x 100 mm. After printing a few small projects, mostly parts for my car’s interior and after-market radio upgrade, I realized it is a hobby/tool I can put into great use for my model train layout projects, but it is too small.

My current printers are a Creality Ender-3 Max Neo 3D printer with a build plate of 300x0300mm and 320 mm height. Soon I received an offer from Creality I could not resist, a huge discount on the smaller Ender-3 V2 3D printer with a build plate of 220x220mm and 250 mm height… I bought two of them.

All three printers are controlled with the Creality 7-inch screen Sonic pad based on Klipper software for higher printing speed and more functions. It allows control of 4 printers at the same time.

Creality Ender 3 series printers. The 3D Max Neo comes almost fully assembled, but the Ender 3 V2 series are truly a kit, which need to be completely assembled and adjusted. For a non-technical person this could be an issue.

My setup

My 3D printing station setup quickly into a small “print farm” “lol”

Thanks to the Creality Sonic Pad I can print much, much faster than when the printers are used with their original controller. However, with faster speed comes more vibration, so I needed a sturdy table to place all 3 printers on. I found a nice strong tall kitchen table that I could easily modify to place two printers on the bottom. Next, I added fireproof/dustproof constant temperature protective covers “tents” to help in reducing failure prints.

Ventilation/exhaust system

Soon after running these 3D printers I noticed I would be better off if I have a means of ventilation/exhausting the fumes and smells. Although PLA is not bad, it does smell after a few hours of printing. I also intend to later print with ABS and other materials, and that does require a ventilation/exhaust system.
